A chronic inflammatory disease that affects the teeth and oral tissues, periodontitis, increases, according to numerous studies, the risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease.

JM Liljestrand, University of Helsinki (Finland), and colleagues evaluated the correlation between the number of missing teeth and cardiovascular disease.
By analyzing the data collected on 8446 participants, ages 25 to 75, with 13 years of follow-up, the team found that more than five missing teeth increase the risk of coronary events and myocardial infarctions by 140%. More than nine missing teeth they increase the risk for cardiovascular diseases (51%), diabetes (31%) and death (37%).

The authors conclude that: "Even a few missing teeth may indicate an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or other diseases cause mortality. When the individual risk factors for chronic disease were evaluated, the number of missing teeth It could be another useful indicator for physicians. "
