A new European research, published in The FASEB Journal, suggests that the loss of colored pigment in the skin (vitiligo), or hair can be corrected by a new compound - one of pseudocatalase - that reverses oxidative stress.

The cure for gray hair may be facing: the need to cover one of the classic signs of aging with chemical pigments (dyes) will be a thing of the past thanks to research a team of European researchers. In a new research report published in The FASEB Journal, the researchers argue that the people who make an enormous oxidative stress through the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide in the hair follicle, have numerous gray and white hair. This massive accumulation of hydrogen peroxide can be solved with a treatment developed by researchers and described as a topical, a compound called UVB-activated PC-KUS (a pseudocatalase amended). The study also shows that the same treatment works for the loss of skin pigment, vitiligo.

"Vitiligo is a problem for many people," said Karin U. Schallreuter, MD, lead author of the study at the Institute for Diseases of Pigmented in association with EM Arndt University of Greifswald, Germany, and the Centre for Skin Sciences, School of Life Sciences, University of Bradford, UK . "Improving the quality of life after total or partial repigmentation was documented."

To achieve this breakthrough, Dr. Schallreuter and colleagues analyzed an international group of 2,411 patients with vitiligo. Of this group, 57 people or equal to 2.4% suffered from segmental vitiligo (SSV), and 76 persons, 3.2% suffered from vitiligo mixed SSV or more non-segmental vitiligo (NSV). The researchers found that patients with SSV have a higher level of oxidative stress in patients with NSV, associated with a decreased antioxidant capacity.

"For generations, many remedies have been landscaped to hide gray hair," said Gerald Weissmann, the Editor in Chief of The FASEB Journal, "but now we could be in front of an effective treatment that addresses the root of the problem. This is also true for vitiligo. This important discovery has the potential to radically improve the lives of many people "
