The results of recent studies show that about 1 in 3 adults over the age of 50 years suffer from sarcopenia, a progressive loss of muscle mass and strength, which can affect a person's energy and ability to perform daily activities.

Maintaining muscle mass and strength reduces the risk of sarcopenia. The researchers found that increasing the resistance exercise through activities such as weight lifting, and increasing the daily intake of HMB (an amino acid found naturally in muscle and is found in small amounts in some foods, such as avocado, grapefruit and catfish), protein and essential amino acids, it helps to improve muscle mass, strength, and function.

"Most people think that sarcopenia affects only people in nursing homes or other care facilities, or at least very old, but these results show that it is just as well," said Robert H. Miller, Ph. D., Divisional Vice President of Abbott Nutrition. "That's why it is important for adults and doctors to take nutrition seriously and consider whether people are getting the nutrients needed to maintain muscle health as they age."
