Supplements that aid memory

A new study from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) and published in "The Journal of the American Geriatrics Society" in May, showing an association between lifestyle habits / sleep patterns and memory. The study suggests that changes in sleep duration in middle age and in old age may worsen the function of memory.

Dr. Elizabeth Devore, a professor of medicine in the Division of Medicine at BWH, has found that women who slept five hours or less, or nine or more hours a day, either in middle age and in old age, they had a worse memory, equivalent to almost two more years of age, compared to those who sleep an average of seven hours a day.

The study involved 15,263 participants: nurses, aged up to 70 years without heart problems and depression at initial cognitive assessment.

"Given the importance of the preservation of memory in later life, it is important to identify modifiable factors, such as sleep habits, which can help to achieve this goal," said the Devore. "Our results suggest that an average amount of sleep, seven hours a day, can help keep your memory in old age and that clinical interventions based on the sleep therapy should be re-evaluated for the prevention of cognitive impairment."
