Products to relieve stress, improve mood

React positively to stressful situations can play a key role in health, long-term.

Nancy Sin, Penn State (Pennsylvania, USA), and colleagues measured the reactions to stress and the physiological effects of stress among the 872 adults enrolled in the "National Study of Daily Experiences." Blood samples of the participants were obtained at a clinic visit and analyzed for inflammatory markers. The subjects were interviewed by telephone every day for eight consecutive days. They were asked to rank their positive and negative emotions, and reveal whether they met or not stressors.

The team found that those who fail to maintain positive attitudes, such as happiness or calm, facing minor stressors of everyday life, have high levels of inflammation. Among women, negative reactions to stress are associated with increased C-reactive protein.

The study's authors warn that: "Adults who fail to maintain a positive attitude in the face of minor stressors in daily life seem to have elevated levels of IL-6, a marker of inflammation. Women who have negative attitudes in the face of small stress factors may be at particular high risk of inflammation. "
