The personality of an individual and his outlook on life can affect the risk of developing dementia
, according to a new study conducted in Finland.

Cynical distrust, anger or hostility are linked to inflammation and heart disease, and dementia can be an 'other potential consequence of a bad attitude towards life, researchers say.

"Previous studies have linked the distrust and cynicism in a lower socio-economic position and therefore in worse health conditions," said Anna-Maija Tolppanen, author of the study.

For their analysis, the researchers defined cynicism as the conviction of a person that others are motivated only by selfishness.

They examined data on 1,500 people aged between 65 and 79 years. The participants were tested for baseline characteristics, attitudes, and risk / incidence of dementia in 1997 and 10 years later. The researchers measured the cynicism with a survey of eight questions with scores on a scale of zero to 24, with higher numbers representing greater cynicism.

People who had high scores on the scale cynicism, between 15 and 24 points, tended to be heavier and were more likely to smoke, according to findings published in the journal Neurology. The group has been highly cynical, even the smallest, 164 people, compared to 246 in the group that has detected a moderate cynicism and 212 in the group less cynical.
There were 14 diagnoses of dementia in the most cynical group, compared with 13 in the moderately-cynical group and 9 in the group less cynical. The group has a more cynical risk of developing dementia more than three times that of the group less cynical.

"Our personality can affect our health,"
said the Tolppanen.

More research with a larger group of people, it is necessary to better identify the role that cynicism may play in the risk of dementia. But what is important, they say, is that the attitudes and way of life can be changed, and if it leads to better health and quality of life, it's worth a try.
Smoking, alcohol use, nutrition and physical activity, as well as their destination consequences: high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, depression ... are things that can be changed or controlled.
