Telomeres are the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes, which influence the cellular age. They are combinations of DNA and proteins that protect the ends of chromosomes and help them to remain stable. As they become shorter and their structural integrity weakens, cells age and die faster. The telomeres get shorter with the passing years.
 

In the study, the researchers examined three healthy behaviors: balanced diet, practice of physical activity and good rest in 239 post-menopausal women, non-smokers. The women provided blood samples at the beginning and end of the year for the measurement of telomeres and reported information about stressful events that occurred during the 12-month study period. In women with less healthy behaviors, there was a significantly greater decrease in the length of telomeres in immune cells for every major stressor of life that occurred during the year. While women who have maintained an active lifestyle, healthy diet, and good sleep quality if exposed to stress have not suffered a greater telomere shortening.
 

"This is the first study that supports the idea he stressful events may accelerate the aging of immune cells in adults, even in the short period of one year., But maintain a healthy lifestyle, even during periods of high stress, it is particularly important to mitigate the aging of our immune cells, "said Puterman.
 

The shorter telomeres are associated with a wide range of aging-related diseases, including stroke, vascular dementia, cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, and many forms of cancer.
 

The research on telomeres and the enzyme telomerase, has been launched by three Americans, including UCSF molecular biologist and co-author Elizabeth Blackburn, PhD. Blackburn co-discovered the enzyme telomerase in 1985 scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 2009 for their work.
