A cross-sectional study from the University of Tokyo, which involved 1,000 Japanese men and women, reports that the practice of physical activity in middle age is a protective factor against sarcopenia and is effective in maintaining muscle strength and physical performance with the passage of time.

The Sarcopenia is a disease associated with the aging process , leading to loss of skeletal muscle mass and muscle strength that may be associated , in the elderly , including the total or partial loss of functionality. The multiple adverse health effects include physical disability , poor quality of life and premature death.

The study evaluated the prevalence of sarcopenia and its association with physical performance in elderly Japanese in 1000 participants ( 349 men and 651 women aged ≥ 65 years) enrolled in the Research on Osteoarthritis / Osteoporosis . The researchers observed that sarcopenia had spread to 13.8% in men and 12.4% in women involved , and tends to be significantly higher with increasing age in both sexes.

The analysis showed that exercise done regularly in middle age is associated with low prevalence of sarcopenia in old age and is significantly associated with improved grip strength and gait speed.

The study was presented at the 4th Regional Meeting for Asia - Pacific IOF , held in Hong Kong from 12 until 15 December 2013.

The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF ) is the world's largest non-governmental organization dedicated to the prevention , diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and related musculoskeletal diseases . IOF leads the World Osteoporosis Day October 20 of each year.
