Marriage can be the key to a longer life?

According to new research, not having a stable partner during middle age produces an increased risk of premature death.

The research carried out by Dr. Ilene Siegler and colleagues at Duke University Medical Center in the United States, was published in the Springer journal Annals of Behavioral Medicine.

Siegler and colleagues examined the effect of marriage and his life during middle age in relation to the risk of premature death.
They analyzed data from 4,802 people born in 1940, evaluating the stability and changes in marital status during middle age, their personality at college (average age 18 years), their socio-economic status and risk behaviors for health. They found that having a stable partner during middle age reduces the risk of premature death: who has never been married more than twice as likely to die earlier than those who have had a stable marriage for their entire lives. Being single, or have suffered the loss of a partner without finding the next, increases the risk of premature death in middle age and shorten the life of the elderly. Even in the presence of other factors risky, related to personality and health, marital status continued to have a major impact on survival.

The authors conclude: "Our results suggest that the presence of a stable partner during middle age is a functional and emotional support, which is closely correlated with mortality"
