Triclosan is an antimicrobial agent commonly added to soaps and shampoos.

Robert H. Tukey, the University of California / San Diego (California, USA), and colleagues found that triclosan has interrupted compromise the integrity of the liver and liver function in some lab rats.
Mice exposed to triclosan for six months (equivalent to 18 human years) were more susceptible to chemical-induced liver tumors. Their tumors were also larger and more frequent than in mice not exposed to triclosan.

The researchers argue that the mechanism of action may be the following: triclosan interferes with androstane receptor, a protein responsible for the detoxification of foreign chemicals to the body. To compensate for this stress, the liver cells proliferate and become fibrotic over time. Repeated exposure to triclosan, therefore, promotes the formation of tumors.

The study authors urge that: "These results show that there are adverse health effects in mice with long-term exposure to triclosan, the type fibrogenesis and tumorigenesis. It follows that the toxicity of triclosan for man must necessarily be evaluated. "
