A study carried out at the Miriam Hospital shows off the keys to the success of long-term maintenance of healthy weight achieved.

The study followed the participants in weight loss and subsequent maintenance for a period of 10 years. It ' was published in the January 2014 of the ' American Journal of Preventive Medicine.


J. Graham Thomas , Ph.D., is the lead author of this study , which involved nearly 3,000 participants. The participants lost at least 30 pounds in 10 years, and have kept the weight off for at least a year.

Objective of the study was to identify predictors of success in maintaining weight loss. The results show that the maintenance of weight loss in the long term is possible if individuals adhere to key health behaviors .

Thomas says: "On average, the participants have retained most of their weight loss through the adoption of a proper lifestyle , based on : continuous physical activity ( regular and constant , every week , throughout the ' year), constant attention to diet (restriction of fats and sugars , plenty of fruit and vegetables in season .) This is one of the few studies that analyze the maintenance of weight loss over such a long period . what the results tell us is clear that the maintenance of weight loss in the long term is possible, but requires some persistent health behaviors key "
