Maintain muscle mass and strength reduces the risk of sarcopenia, a loss of muscle mass and strength, age-related.
Sarcopenia can affect a person's energy and ability to perform daily activities.

Zhe-rong Xu, of Zhejiang University (China), and colleagues have completed a meta-analysis of several published clinical studies on the effects of leucine, an amino acid, on the parameters of muscle mass. The authors analyzed as dietary supplementation of leucine increased protein synthesis and therefore muscle mass.
A total of nine studies were included in the meta-analysis. The results showed that the rate of muscle protein synthesis after the integration was significantly increased in the group that had assumed leucine compared to the control group. No difference was found between the groups in relation to lean body mass or leg lean mass.

The researchers said: "The leucine supplementation is useful to address the decline, age-related muscle mass in the elderly, as it increases muscle protein."
