A number of studies suggest that having a purpose in life - your own personal sense of life, or a goal, a direction - can reduce a number of negative effects on health.

Lei Yu, of Rush University Medical Center (Illnois, USA), and colleagues studied the results of the autopsy on 453 seniors, who participated in the Rush Memory and Aging Project.

All participants underwent yearly physical and psychological assessments, including an assessment standard of purpose in life - where the purpose in life was judged on a five-point scale (higher scores indicating a greater purpose), score average of 3.5.

Participants were followed until death, at an average age of 90 years. At baseline, 114 subjects were stroke. At autopsy, 154 individuals revealed macroscopic infarcts (areas of stroke damage visible to the naked eye) and 128 microinfarcts (areas of damage visible under a microscope).

The team observed that for every increase of one point of the score of purpose in life, the probability of having one or more macroscopic infarcts decreases by about 50%.

The study authors write that: "Having a purpose in life can affect the risk for cerebral infarction."
