Previous studies report that exposure to the natural environment can improve health behaviors (encouraging physical activity), as well as improve mental health (including, lower levels of depression).
 
Diana Grigsby-Toussaint, a researcher at the University of Illinois (Illinois, USA), and colleagues analyzed data linkage on the behavioral risk factors of 255.171 adult men and women.
The team also used an index that USDA assigns scores to various geographical areas of the country according to the natural beauty, the hours of sunlight, important in regulating the circadian rhythm of a person, and temperature. The survey question on the quality of sleep in the last month, the researchers found that the most common response was that respondents had slept badly for less than a week.


In the entire sample, individuals with 21-29 days of insufficient sleep were those who had lower odds of access to green space and the natural environment, than those reporting less than a week.
The relationship between sleep and exposure to a green space was much stronger for men than for women; as well as for men and women over 65.
