Numerous published studies show that prolonged sitting, as many people do every day in their work, with associated risk factors such as high cholesterol levels and high waist circumference, can lead to cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

Saurabh Thosar, Indiana University (Indiana, USA), and colleagues enrolled 11 healthy men aged between 20 and 35 years old, who participated in two randomized studies. In one study they sat for three hours without moving your legs. The researchers used a blood pressure cuff and ultrasound technology to measure the functionality of the femoral artery at baseline and every one, two and three hours.
In the second study, the men sat for a period of three hours, to which alternated a walk on a treadmill for 5 minutes at a speed of 2 mph to30 minutes, 1.5 hours and 2.5 hours.
The researchers measured the functionality of the femoral artery at the same intervals as in the process. The team has shown that during a period of three hours, the flow-mediated dilation, or dilation of the arteries due to increased blood flow, the main artery in the legs was impaired by as much as 50% after just one hour. In study participants who walked for 5 minutes every hour of sitting it was observed that the arterial function remains the same, suggesting a beneficial effect of increased muscle activity and an increased inflow of blood.

The researchers conclude that: "Three hours of sitting lead to a considerable deterioration of the flow of the femoral artery. When sedentary activities were alternated with work interruptions, the decline in the flow has been stopped."
