Being fit
middle age is an important
prevention tool is because it revealed a new British study, conducted by Rachel Cooper, lead author of the study from University College London.

The research is the first to connect the physical ability of middle-aged people (mean age 53 years) and the probability of dying.

The researchers analyzed data on 2,800 people from a national survey, born during the month of March 1946 in Wales, England and Scotland. All participants received a home visit by a nurse who assessed the ability of each participant to perform three physical evidence. A test measured the grip strength, another the ability to balance on one foot, and the third the time it takes to get up from a chair. All three tests are commonly used to assess the state of physical fitness in research studies.

The authors have followed the participants for the next 13 years, using the information from the register of the National Health Service to find out if they had died in the meantime. They took into account other factors that can influence the risk of death, such as smoking, body mass index, and family history of heart and lung problems.

There were 177 deaths during the next 13 years.

Cooper and colleagues found that participants who had the worst results in the three tests were four times more likely to die in subsequent years than those who had achieved higher scores in tests. While those who were not able to perform the three tests had more than eight times as likely to die than the top performers.

"The data obtained from the tests may reflect the presence of a disease in its earliest stages and therefore provide a useful indication of disease and aging processes that can be detrimental to the future health, but which are not yet still clinically manifest" said Cooper.
