The ability to accurately identify the odors can have an impact on the life span.

Davangere Devanand, of Columbia University (New York, USA), and colleagues enrolled 1,169 men and women older than 65 years. Each has been asked to sniff the scent strips and identify the odor from a list of multiple choice. People with a reduced ability to identify certain odors had a greater risk of dying during a mean follow-up of 4 years. The mortality rate was 45% in those with the lowest scores on a test of odor identification, compared with 18% of participants with the highest scores.

The authors of the study state that: "The 'inability to identify the smell, is associated with increased mortality in the elderly, and is linked to cognitive impairment."
