Skin cancer ( melanoma ) is a very common form of cancer in the United States . Melanoma , in fact, affects 75,000 Americans each year and results in approximately 9,000 deaths. High numbers also cover most of the western countries.

Jerry Brewer, from the Mayo Clinic ( Minnesota, USA) and colleagues have completed a population-based study using data from the Rochester Epidemiology Project , the participants were aged between 40 and 60 years with a first diagnosis of melanoma between January 1, 1970 and December 31, 2009 .

The researchers found that among white adults , non- Hispanics, the incidence of skin cancer has increased 4.5 times among men and a 24-fold among women. In particular , women under 50 years have shown a marked increase in melanoma : a discovery that could lead to future studies on a connection , and premenopausal hormonal disease .

Fortunately, the probability of overall survival melanoma increased by 7 % for each year of study. " The improved survival rates may be due to better tools both in the care of prevention ," says Dr. Brewer , " The people visit dermatologists more than before, and we have new tools, such as dermoscopy to display the details "

In addition, the researchers found that the steepest rise in melanoma has occurred in the last ten years covered by the study , 2000-2009 . The researchers speculate that this may be linked to the spread of tanning beds in the 1980s and 1990s. "There was a cultural tendency for many decades to believe tanned people with being fit and successful ," says Brewer.

The authors of the study conclude that: "The incidence of cutaneous melanoma among middle-aged adults has increased over the last 4 decades , especially in middle-aged women , while mortality has decreased ."

Skin cancer can be prevented. Dr. Brewer gives four simple tips to reduce the chances of skin cancer :

1 . Avoid the use of tanning beds
2 . Always use sunscreen when you are exposed to the sun
3 . Perform frequent examinations of skin self-examination
4 . Make a check-in with your dermatologist every year
