New research suggests that it could significantly reduce the risk of developing bowel cancer by adopting healthy behaviors 5. What are they?

- The maintenance of a healthy weight;

- A low percentage of fat in the abdomen;

- Adopting a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, yogurt, nuts and seeds, foods high in fiber, and low amounts of red meat and processed foods;

- The practice of regular physical activity;

- Do not smoke and limit alcohol;

Dr. Krasimira Aleksandrova and colleagues at the German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbruecke analyzed data of 347 237 men and women from 10 countries participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC).

During the study period of 12 years, there have been 3759 cases of bowel cancer. The results showed that more healthy behaviors, the participants adopted, the lower is the risk of bowel cancer. Compared with people who had adopted one healthy behavior, those who have adopted a combination of 2, 3, 4, or all 5 healthy behavior: had respectively 13%, 21%, 34% and 37% lower risk of developing bowel cancer.

The authors noted that the impact of healthy behaviors appeared to be stronger in men than in women. "Estimates based on our population suggest that up to 22% of cases in men and 11% of cases in women could have been avoided if all five healthy lifestyles were followed. Our results show, in particular, the potential prevention in men who are at higher risk of bowel cancer than women, "said Dr. Alexsandrova. "These data provide a further incentive to private doctors and health authorities to invest in initiatives to promote a healthy lifestyle. Each person can personally contribute significantly to avoid cancer, simply by making healthier your style life."
