The goal of anti-aging medicine is not only to prolong the total years of an individual's life, but also ensure that those years are enjoyed in a productive and vital. The authors predict that the greatest benefits will come from reducing high blood pressure and tobacco use. They calculate that a more ambitious 50% reduction in smoking prevalence by 2025, instead of the current 30% target, reduce the risk of dying prematurely by more than 24% in men and 20% in women.

Spiegelhalter has calculated that people can lose 30 minutes of life expectancy for every two cigarettes they smoke, to be 4 kg overweight, and eating an extra serving of red meat per day, and argues that this approach "allows you to fully realizing the size of the chronic risks that exist "
