Increase the size of the skirt during the period of post menopause can significantly increase the risk of breast cancer in women,
according to new research.

Researchers from the Universities of London and Manchester (UK) examined data from 93,000 women belonging to the United Kingdom Collaborative Trial of Ovarian Cancer Screening (UKCTOCS). The women were all older than 50 years had gone through menopause and had not had breast cancer before joining the study between 2005 and 2010.

And 'participants were asked to provide detailed information on height and weight; reproductive health; fertility; family history of breast cancer and ovarian cancer; and the use of hormonal contraceptives and HRT. E 'was also sought also the actual size of their skirt and the one that led to 20 years.

After a monitoring period of 3-4 years, women have been asked to continue the use of hormone replacement therapy, monitored their overall health and their lifestyle, including how much they smoked and drank.

The results showed that 1,090 women developed breast cancer during the monitoring period, giving an absolute risk of just over 1%. As expected based on previous studies, treatment of infertility, family history of breast / ovarian cancer, use of hormone replacement therapy were all significantly associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. However, an increase in the size of the skirt has emerged as the strongest predictor of risk of breast cancer. The increase in size of 1 every 10 years was associated with a 33% greater risk of developing breast cancer after menopause; while the increase of 2 sizes in the same period was associated with a 77% higher risk. The results also showed that reducing a size of the skirt had a reduced risk of breast cancer. The association of the size of the skirt with the risk of breast cancer was independent of BMI.

The researchers concluded: "Although the exact mechanism of these relationships needs to be better understood, there is an indication that the body fat around the waist is more metabolically active than fat elsewhere and therefore linked to the risk of cancer."
