Women in menopause or post-menopausal women who take care of their grandchildren at least one day a week they have a better memory and cognitive processing faster than those who do not have grandchildren or not treating them regularly, according to new research by the University of Melbourne.

The researchers, however, issued a warning: the women who cared for the grandchildren five or more days per week were significantly slower in the elaboration and organization of plans, perhaps because they felt tired.

The results come from the Women's Healthy Ageing Project (whap) longitudinal prospective study of more than 20 years, conducted on women in Melbourne. The Director of Whap, Associate Professor Cassandra Szoeke of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, said that it is important to study the impact of grandparents sullasocietà and health.

"The social commitment, mood enhancement, continuous learning and mental stimulation have all been shown to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease. These are all important elements to stave off dementia," said Cassandra Szoeke.

There is an increasing reliance on grandparents especially by dual-income families where both parents are busy at work.

"Grandparents provide meaningful to our community, helping children and grandchildren, and drawing at the same time benefits that keep them active and healthy," the researchers conclude.
