A new study suggests that engaging in low-intensity activities, such as the stand may not be enough to offset the health risks of sitting for long periods of time. On the positive side: the addition of two-minute walk every hour could make a difference. These results were published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology

Numerous studies have shown that sitting still for long periods of time each day leads to an increased risk of premature death, as well as increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes and other diseases. It should be also considered that 80% of Americans practice less physical activity than the recommended 2.5 hours of moderate activity each week.

With this in mind, scientists at the University of Utah School of Medicine, using observational data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) estimated as the low intensity activities (eg standing) and the activities of greater intensity (eg walking, light gardening, cleaning) may affect the lifespan of sedentary people.

An interruption of the session to carry out low-intensity for two minutes every hour was associated with a 33% lower risk of dying prematurely.

"Based on these results, we recommend adding two minute walk every hour, in combination with normal activities, which should include 2.5 hours of moderate exercise a week," says Beddhu, an author of the study. Moderate exercise strengthens the heart, muscles and bones, and provides other benefits for mental and physical health. "

"Exercise is good, but the reality is that the amount of exercise of high intensity that can be achieved is limited. Our study suggests that even small changes can have a big impact," adds senior author Tom Greene .
