Listening to music is a stimulation for cognitive function of the human brain, which is known to induce various neural and physiological changes.

Chakravarthi Kanduri, University of Helsinki (Finland), and colleagues studied like listening to classical music affects the gene expression profiles of participants musically experienced and inexperienced.
All participants listened to the violin concerto by WA Mozart No. 3, G-major, K.216 that lasts 20 minutes. The researchers found that listening to music has enhanced the activity of genes involved in the secretion of dopamine, synaptic function, learning and memory. One of the major regulated genes, alpha-synuclein (SNCA), is a gene recognized to be at risk for Parkinson's disease, and is located in the region of the brain involved with musical aptitude.

Listening to music, according to the researchers, promotes the regulation of genes that are associated with neurodegeneration, then the music plays an important neuroprotective role.
