The World Health Organization ( WHO) reports that tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals , of which 250 are known to be harmful to human health , and 50 of these have been identified as carcinogenic .
The WHO estimates that , while 6 million people die from smoking each year , another 600,000 die from exposure to tobacco smoke from other people, or second-hand smoke or passive. Passive smoking , in particular, is especially harmful to children.

Seana Gall, University of Tasmania ( Australia ) and colleagues analyzed data collected on 2401 subjects enrolled in the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study ( Finland ) and 1,375 participants enrolled in the Childhood Determinants of Adult Health ( Australia). The subjects were interviewed about their parents' smoking habits and ultrasound has been used as a tool to measure the thickness of the walls of the arteries as children, once they reach adulthood , and then 25 years later. The researchers found that the ' carotid IMT in adulthood was 0.015 mm DI more often in people who are exposed to both smoking parents than in those whose parents did not smoke .

The data suggest that : the pervasive effect of exposure to parental smoking on vascular health of children occurs up to 25 years later. The authors of the study recommend strongly : "It 's necessary to continue efforts to reduce smoking among adults, not only for themselves but also to protect the younger ones, who are not responsible for the choice of the parents, but they suffer the damage. Such conscious attitude could reduce the 'burden of cardiovascular disease among the population"
