The increased level of cholesterol, very frequent with the passing years, increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels all increase in middle age and then decreases with age, while the opposite is true of HDL or "good" cholesterol.

Research conducted by Xuemei Sui, professor at the Arnold School of Public Health of the University of South Carolina, and colleagues, suggests that it is possible to delay these changes in cholesterol levels while maintaining high levels of cardiorespiratory fitness (the body's ability to deliver oxygen the muscles during exercise and the ability of muscles to use oxygen).

The results of the study showed that men with a poor practice of cardiorespiratory fitness had a higher risk of developing high cholesterol, while this does not happen in men with a good level of cardiorespiratory fitness.

In addition, men with little experience of developing cardiorespiratory fitness levels of HDL cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol abnormal more frequently, while those with greater practice of cardiorespiratory fitness have normal levels for their entire lifespan.

"These results suggest that the improvement in the levels of cardiorespiratory fitness can delay the onset of dyslipidemia," said Yong-Moon Park Mark, the author of the study. "Promoting active lifestyles, for regular practice of cardio fitness, it can help reduce the risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease."
