A regular blood flow is crucial to maintaining cardiovascular health. Markos Klonizakis, of Sheffield Hallam University (UK), and colleagues studied a group of 20 healthy men and women, but sedentary, average age 55 years.

During a period of eight weeks, one group was encouraged to eat more vegetables, fruits, olive oil, nuts and fresh fish and engage in moderate exercise program; the second group played only exercise. While both groups showed improvement in microvascular responses, the group that followed the Mediterranean-style diet, in addition to practicing physical exercise, showed an improvement more evident.

Importantly, these improvements were also seen after one year, if the parties have continued to follow the new lifestyle.
The study's authors argue that: "Combining a Mediterranean-style diet with exercise promises long-term benefits, if practiced regularly, especially among people at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease"
