Products to relieve stress, improve mood

Take a short break at work and practice some simple relaxation techniques can drastically reduce your stress levels.

Research has shown that there are methods to teach employees to better manage situations of high stress levels.

Anne-Marie Duchemin, a researcher and professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center, and colleagues conducted a study to determine if some simple relaxation techniques, to practice in the workplace, can help reduce stress levels. Relaxation techniques used were: stretching, yoga, meditation and music therapy. Before the study began, the participants expressed their stress level on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 = very stressful. The average participant was 7.15. While there was no change in the perception of the level of work stress during the study, the reaction of some participants has changed significantly at the end of the study. The salivary alpha amylase, a biomarker activation of the sympathetic nervous system, was measured at baseline and then again at the end of the study, and the results showed that was reduced by 40% in the group who practiced relaxation techniques.

"The changes in the levels of salivary alpha-amylase suggest that stress reactivity was reduced after surgery with relaxation techniques," said Dr. Duchemin. "Although it can not be completely eliminated work-related stress, effective relaxation strategies can help reduce its harmful effects."
