The majority of adults living in Western countries is becoming more and more sedentary, partly because of modern electronic equipment.

Miguel Martinez-Gonzalez, University of Navarra (Spain), and colleagues evaluated 13,284 Spanish adults healthy young (mean age 37 years) to determine the association between three types of sedentary behavior and risk of death: the time elapsed in front of the tv, in front of the pc and driving.

The participants were followed for 8 years, during which there were 97 deaths (19 cardiovascular deaths, 46 cancer and 32 from other causes). The analysis of the data revealed that the risk of death was twice as high for participants who reported watching three or more hours of television per day, compared to those who spent less time watching TV. The scientists said: "Television viewing has been directly associated with mortality, whereas the use of the computer and the time spent driving were not significantly associated with a higher mortality."

"Television viewing is a major sedentary behavior and there is a growing trend toward all types of sedentary behavior," said Miguel Martinez-Gonzalez, MD, Ph.D., MPH, lead author of the study and professor and chair of the Department of Public Health at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain.

"With an aging population, sedentary behavior will become more widespread, especially watching television, which does not require cognitive engagement, and this places an additional burden to the health problems associated with aging," said Martinez-Gonzalez. The research was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
