It defines Cardiorespiratory (CRF), the measure of the ability of the circulatory and respiratory systems of the body to deliver oxygen to the skeletal muscles during prolonged exercise.

Tian Qu, the National Institute on Aging (NIA, Maryland, USA), and colleagues studied 146 men and women of average age 69 years and without cognitive impairment at the beginning of the study, for a decade.
The team used treadmill test to measure cardiorespiratory activity and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to detect changes in brain volume. At the beginning of the study, the researchers used mathematical models to estimate the fitness levels of the participants when they had the age of 50 years. The people who were in better shape than 50 years had a larger volume of the brain in the temporal average, the region of the brain involved in memory, language and visual perception, as well as in the perirhinal cortex, which helps the unconscious memory and object recognition. They also had a higher volume of white matter; when it falls, it could be an early symptom of Alzheimer's disease.

The study authors say: "The cardiorespiratory activities can play an important role in preserving brain volumes in older age, and therefore cognitive function."
